Asturias is also foodie heaven. After all, this is Spain and food to a Spaniard is a source of pride, a way to live, it is central to their identity.
Here, we present a few tips and suggestions of unique and extraordinary experiences that can be added to your itinerary for Asturias. These experiences will allow you to enjoy different traditional dishes and the local customs in a truly authentic way.
Tips:
Visiting Asturias and not eating a Fabada is like going to Covadonga and not seeing the Santina. Almost all the restaurants offer this delicacy made of Asturian fabes (beans) and other ingredients ranging according your taste, such as chorizo, pork meat. Of course, if you are a foodie, there are other local specialties: Oysters, Seafood and shellfish, meat …well , the list goes on …
Cider is the Asturian drink par excellence. Did you know that the Principado de Asturias is responsible for 80% of Spain’s cider production? If you want to discover how cider is made, the best way is to visit any of the many llagares (cellars where the apples are crushed to make cider) in the area. You'll be able to see apple orchards and learn about traditional apple-growing methods and you'll have the chance to taste a typical meal (cider tasting with products such as hard-boiled eggs, chorizo, omelettes, savoury pastries, cheese...).
Visit the Cider Museum in Nava, not to far away from Oviedo.
Mingle in a cider house, feel the atmosphere were the locals socialize and share unforgettable moments, while eating and drinking.
Visit one of the cheese caves. Besides cider, Asturias is also well known as the capital of cheeses. From a list of more than 40 varieties, one of the most famous cheeses here is Cabrales. The cheese is made from a mixture of cow’s, sheep’s and goat’s milk, aged for two to three months in underground cheese caves in the Picos de Europa natural Park. The tour ends with a tasting.
