Add the stunning hilltop views, that arguably make Lisbon the most scenic capital in Europe, the trademark mosaic floors, the dilapidated pastel-colored or tile-covered buildings, the iconic turn-of-the-century streetcars, or the melancholy Fado music, and you will find one of the most moving cities in the world.
Lisbon enjoys more than 3000 hours of sunshine a year, and on this guided vacation, we will immerse ourselves in the city's history, traditions and culture. During the day, the streets come alive with locals going about their daily lives and visitors wander through them, visiting museums, art galleries, and theaters. From the beautiful view of the Castelo de São Jorge (with breathtaking views of the city), through Chiado to Bairro Alto, you will find many modern and tempting restaurants, stores, and bars to stop by.
Towards Belem, located in the southwestern part of the city, we find the majestic Jerónimos Monastery and the famous Belem Tower (two World Heritage monuments that stand as reminders of the great Age of Discovery). Don't forget the city's iconic Monument to the Discoveries, immortalizing in stone the founders of the global village.
Nearby, the Belém Cultural Center, and of course the famous "Pastéis de Belém" a traditional Portuguese pastry created before the 18th century that simply cannot be missed.
Lisbon also welcomed a new world-class modern art collection at the Berardo Museum, a reborn Design and Fashion Museum, and the iconic MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology). Catch unusual art at the Gulbenkian, which holds one of the best private art collections in the world.
Would you like to help with conservation projects? Visit the Oceanarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world, with high-tech exhibits. Inside the state-of-the-art aquarium, 25,000 creatures ranging from sharks to seahorses swim in harmony, a masterpiece by American architect Peter Chermeyeff.
Portuguese cuisine is one of the highlights of underrated Lisbon. Almost every restaurant serves fresh grilled fish and amazing seafood. It is easy to find restaurants that will take you on a journey of flavors and tradition.
To escape the city, the perfect destination has always been Sintra. This World Heritage town has quite a magical atmosphere. The Pena Palace is a must-see, being one of the most fantastic storybook royal palaces you will find in Europe. The Quinta da Regaleira and the National Palace are two other exquisite and exotic architectural highlights.
Nearby, on the coastline, you will find Estoril's Tamariz Beach, overlooked by the Castilian residence belonging to the royal family of Monaco, from where you can use the seaside promenade to reach Cascais, a fashionable, quite beautiful beach town, especially its Guincho Beach, made famous as a venue for the World Surfing Championships.
