THEMATIC PROGRAMS | POPULAR FESTIVALS AND PILGRIMAGES
Do you love traditions, folklore, or simply want a lively weekend? Take advantage of the many festivals and pilgrimages in Portugal and join the locals, live and feel the intensity with which they live their traditions!
There is at least one option for every week of the year.

There is nothing more genuine than the traditional Portuguese festivals and pilgrimages, be they of a religious, gastronomic or pagan nature, which take crowds to the streets, mix sacred and profane, announce themselves with firecrackers and drums.

And believe us, we can only mention a tiny part of them.

Carnival: Carnival is proof that not all festivals have to be religious. Although it doesn't have the fame of the Brazilian or the luxury of the Venetian, the Portuguese Carnival is one of the biggest celebrations of the year. All over the country, there are revellers and processions with social criticism and small skits.

Nossa Senhora da Agonia Pilgrimage: The patron saint of fishermen with its festival in August, in Viana do Castelo, with Philharmonic Bands, the traditional Mordomia Parade and the Ethnographic Parade are some of the highlights of the pilgrimage, which culminates with the procession at sea.

Procession of the Lord "Ecce Homo" - Holy Week in Braga: There is ?!not much to say about!? "Ecc Homo", because it is the most famous Holy Week in Portugal and one of the most significant among the Christian world. "I have never seen anything like it" is the description most used by first time visitors... "I'm coming back" is the second most used expression!!!

São Mateus Fair: A total of 623 years of history make the São Mateus Fair the oldest free fair on the Iberian Peninsula.

Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Festival: Every year on 8 September, the town dresses up, adorning the streets. The highlight of the celebration is the procession, in which Our Lady of Remedios is carried not by the faithful, but by a group of oxen. The tradition is unique in the world.

New Fairs: The New Fairs were instituted by order of D. Pedro IV, in 1826, to pay homage to Our Lady of Sorrows. For three days and three nights, there is lots of entertainment: from music, to theatre, not forgetting fireworks, horse racing, etc., etc.

Santos Populares: These are lively celebrations, during which people take to the streets eating, drinking and having fun in the old districts, decorated with bows, colourful balloons and the scent of basil. In Lisbon , people from all neighbourhoods parade down Avenida da Liberdade , filling the road with colourful characters in costumes, folk music and crowds of onlookers. In the medieval squares and alleys, people eat cabbage soup and grilled sardines, singing and dancing all night long. In Porto, apart from the fireworks at midnight on the Douro River, people also launch colourful hot air balloons into the sky, one of the most beautiful spectacles of these popular festivals.

Festa dos Tabuleiros: This is held every four years and symbolises the harvest season, where the streets fill with hundreds of girls carrying trays on their heads: each tray should be as tall as the girl carrying it and is made up of 30 loaves of bread and decorated with paper flowers, greenery and ears of wheat.

Visiting a village, town or city in Portugal during its traditional festivals is synonymous with food, folklore and conviviality. If it is true that most of these festive occasions take place in the summer, it is also true that there are festivals and pilgrimages in every month of the year.

We can organize a cultural tour, combined with a Festa or Romaria, where you can appreciate the best the region has to offer!!! And it will certainly be a different Tour, with phenomenal memories!
