Galicia is Art, History, Legend…

Galicia is situated in the north-west corner of Spain, just above Portugal. It is a diverse region, it has a green landscape with mountain ranges, it is rich in rivers, that cross all the region from the mountainous inland, to the coast, where they form the characteristical "Rias". The coast itself offers great contrasts, from the smooth beaches of As Mariñas to the dangerous cliffs of Costa de la Muerte, the "coast of death".

La Coruña, is a historic city whose history has maintained close links with its old fishing port. In the Old city the streets are lined with fine examples of Romanesque and Barroque style architecture. One of the most beautiful is the church of Santiago and the Tower of Hercules, the only working Roman lighthouse in the world, and symbol of the city.

Around the capital of A Coruña there are plenty of interesting places to visit, such as Lugo, located in a hill, on the banks of the river Miño, surrounded by Roman Walls which are perfectly preserved, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia and World Heritage City. Nowadays thousands of pilgrims made their way throughout the world-famous Way of Saint James which is flanked with numerous churches, monasteries, and chapels of high historical-artistical value, finishing at the majestic Cathedral of Santiago, where rest the Apostle Santiago (Saint James).

But Galicia offers much more to be discovered.

Further south, the fishing port of Cambados is seen as the capital of Albariño, Galicia’s delicate and fragrant white wine. Continuing we reach the beautiful fishing village of Combarro. Its old quarter, which has been declared Property of Cultural Interest, is a representative example of three traditional architectural elements in Galicia: "hórreos" (raised granaries), "casas marineras" (sea houses) and crosses.

Pontevedra, this province is said to be one of the most beautiful of Spain, thanks to the marvelous landscapes of Rías Baixas. The city itself offers an outstanding monumental center.

On the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, lies the Galicia’s most populated city, Vigo. Its port is one of the finest natural ports in the world and was the origin of this city fringed by mountains. Once here, do not miss tasting the famous Galician oysters.

Beyond the coast, in the interior of Galicia there is also so much to discover. The area boasts some of the most spectacular gorge scenery in Europe. You'll marvel at its rugged landscapes, dominated by vineyards, mountains, rivers, and dozen monasteries, mostly medieval, churches and shrines, Romanesque style, which attest to this region's importance in the Middle Ages. A genuine journey back through history.

The highlight goes to Ribeira de Sacra, an area of inland Galicia which is home to spectacular natural wonders such as the canyon of the river Sil, a symbol of the region, and valuable artistic heritage. Once here is possible to see old monasteries, like Santo Estevo de Ribas de Miño, and visit historic towns such as Portomarin (one of the main stops of the Camino de Santiago or Way of St James), get to know the medieval town of Monforte de Lemos, and its famous fortress. Another way to live and feel this region is to stroll and visit the vineyards and go on a boat tour along the Canyon of the Sil river.
