Whether you stay in Albufeira, Carvoeiro, Armação de Pêra, Portimão or Vilamoura is very easy to get to both Sagres on the far end of the Western Algarve or Vila Real de Santo António on the Portuguese/Spanish Border in the Eastern Algarve.

Away from the bustling tourist centers, there are also quite a few interesting inland towns like Silves and Loulé both with historic attractions including medieval castles.  Up in the hill of Monchique you will see a way of life that has disappeared from much of Europe. Days revolve around the seasons: gathering provisions for winter; collecting chestnuts and picking berries to make the local firewater. Olives, oranges, carobs and almonds are pulled from the trees and sold at markets.
