SPAIN | MADRID
Everywhere in Madrid are breathtaking — world-class museums like Prado and Reina Sofia, among many others; towering basilicas and cathedrals such as San Gines and Almudena; and gargantuan parks and gardens like Retiro and Sabatini, amazing food, and vibrant night life. The city is so charming that first-timers are likely tempted to stay within its confines and just revel in its beauty.

Nonetheless!
Did you know there’s so much to see and discover on the outskirts of the city? Well, we can name a few tips, and tell you that there are a lot more to talk about:
  • AVILA: One of Spain’s major Castilian pueblos, Avila is famous for its perfectly preserved Murallas or Town Walls. The haunting Catedral de Avila is touted as one of the first Gothic churches built in the country. Walk along Ávila's historic center and discover the legacy of this city declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
  • SEGOVIA: The spectacular city of Segovia, and its Roman aqueduct, built almost 2000 years ago, features 75 single arches and 44 double arches, followed by four single arches, totaling 167 arches in all. Did you know that this ancient structure still works, and is capable of transporting water throughout the city? Visit the Azoguejo Square, the best-preserved area in the city that enjoys the fine distinction of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll through the city’s main square - Plaza Mayor, beholding lovelly monuments like the Cathedral of Segovia, and enter the former royal palace and fortress - the Alcázar Real.
  • TOLEDO: It has a long-standing Christian, Jewish, and Muslim tradition. Furthermore, it is also known as the “city of three cultures”. The Alcazar is its most recognizable landmark, a magnificent site lying in the town’s highest peak. The city of Toledo, known by many as the second Rome, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Enjoy the panoramic views from the Cathedral of Toledo, the Mirador del Valle, The Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, and the Bridge of San Martin. Do not miss the opportunity to explore Toledo’s narrow streets, squares, gardens, and walk along its walls by enjoying the views of the Tagus River.
  • ARANJUEZ: A former royal residence and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Royal Palace of Aranjuez (Palacio Real de Aranjuez) is one of the grandest palaces in the Madrid region. With origins dating to the 16th century, the palace housed generations of the Spanish monarchy, and there for bestowed the title, Spain’s Royal Town. The palace, the beauty of which rivals Madrid’s own Palacio Real, is accentuated by gardens of manicured hedges and multi-hued flowers dedicated to both the King and Queen. It is surrounded by gushing waterways — natural and man-made. The Iglesia de San Antonio, the town’s Royal Church, sits in one part of the plaza of the same name, and is considered as one of the Aranjuez’ major attractions.
